Viola Spolin (1906-1994) regnes av mange for å være the Grandmother of Impro i USA. Hun begynte allerede på 1920-tallet å utvikle impro-øvelser basert på barns lek. Hennes arbeid påvirket de første improvisasjonsteatergruppene i USA, bl.a. The Second City i Chicago. Spolin har skrevet flere bøker om improvisasjon. Hennes mest kjente bok er Improvisation for the Theater.
